Portuguese Sheepdog
Summary
The Serra de Aires Dog, also known as "monkey dog" in its native region — the Serra de Aires in the Alentejo — for its characteristic facial expression, is the only exclusively Portuguese shepherd breed in Group 1. An ancient breed of uncertain origin but deeply rooted in the pastoral traditions of the Alentejo, where it was used to herd cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and even horses. It is a dog of remarkable intelligence, nicknamed by some as the "monkey" for its almost human-like expressions and behaviors.
