Summary

The Fila Brasileiro is a powerful mastiff from Brazil, developed from crosses of European breeds brought by colonisers — probably English Mastiffs, Bulldogs, and Bloodhounds — with local dogs. It was used as a guard dog for large rural properties, for hunting large animals, and tragically, for capturing runaway slaves during the colonial period. Today it is a loyal companion and fearsome guardian, but banned in several countries due to its potentially dangerous nature.

Temperament & Personality

The Fila Brasileiro has a very specific temperament: it is extraordinarily devoted to its family but has an instinctive and deep aversion to strangers — a trait so marked that the breed standard mentions "ojeriza" (aversion to strangers) as a desirable characteristic. This trait makes it an excellent guardian but requires very careful socialisation and an experienced owner who can manage this tendency.
