Summary
The Portuguese Podengo is Portugal's quintessential breed and the oldest in Portugal, existing for centuries as a rabbit and hare hunting dog. It comes in three sizes (large, medium, and small) and two coat varieties (smooth coat and wire coat) — six distinct combinations in total. It is a robust, rustic, very intelligent, and highly versatile dog, having accompanied Portuguese navigators on their expeditions in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The smaller varieties (Podengo Pequeno) are especially popular as companion dogs, due to their manageable energy and practical size. The Medium and Large Podengos need more space and exercise.
