French Water Dog
Summary
The Barbet is one of the oldest water dog breeds in Europe, with records dating back to the 16th century in France. Its name derives from the French word "barbe" (beard), referring to its characteristic prominent beard. It is considered one of the ancestors of several modern breeds, including the Poodle (Caniche), the Portuguese Water Dog, the Briard, and possibly the American Water Spaniel. Nearly extinct after World War II, it was recovered by passionate French breeders and is today a rare but internationally recognized breed.
