Estrela Mountain Dog
Summary
The Serra da Estrela Mountain Dog is the most popular of the Portuguese dogs and one of the oldest in the entire Iberian Peninsula. It originated in the mountains of Serra da Estrela, where it guarded sheep and goat flocks from wolves and thieves for centuries. It is a breed of great nobility and beauty, with a magnificent coat and a temperament that combines courage with family gentleness. It exists in two coat varieties: long-haired (the most common) and short-haired.

Temperament & Personality
The Serra da Estrela Mountain Dog is intelligent, loyal, and very protective of its family. It is affectionate with people it knows well but reserved and suspicious of strangers — an essential characteristic for a flock guardian. With children, it is generally patient and protective. It has a will of its own that requires an owner who establishes clear boundaries from puppyhood, but it does not respond well to coercive methods.
