Summary
The Gascon Saintongeois is a French scent hound breed that exists in two varieties: Grand (large) and Petit (medium). Descended from the ancient Saintonge Hounds, nearly extinct after the French Revolution — only three specimens survived — it was reconstituted in the 19th century through crossbreeding with the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. It is a versatile hunting dog, used for wild boar, roe deer, and in the smaller variety, for hare.
