Summary
The Griffon Nivernais is one of the oldest French scent hounds, with origins dating back to the Middle Ages in the Nivernais region. Once used in large packs by the French nobility to hunt wolves and wild boar, it nearly disappeared at the end of the 19th century, being reconstituted through crossbreeding with Griffon Vendéen, Otterhound, and French Foxhounds. It is a dog of endurance and stamina, not speed.
