How the dog sleep needs calculator works

This calculator tells you how many hours of sleep your dog needs each day based on two factors: age group and size. Puppies need the most sleep (18–20 hours) to support rapid brain development and physical growth. Senior dogs (7+ years) come next at 16–18 hours as their bodies require more rest. Adult large-breed dogs typically sleep 14–16 hours, while adult small- and toy-breed dogs manage on 12–14 hours per day.

Why dogs sleep so much

Unlike humans, dogs are polyphasic sleepers — they take many short sleep episodes spread across the day and night rather than one long block. This pattern allows them to stay alert for activity while still getting the deep, restorative sleep needed for immune function, memory consolidation and muscle repair. The total daily requirement looks high compared to humans but is perfectly normal for dogs.

Signs your dog may be sleep-deprived

Watch for excessive yawning, irritability, reduced coordination, slower reflexes or difficulty learning new commands. A dog that is consistently restless at night or wakes frequently may have an underlying issue worth discussing with your vet — including pain, anxiety or a sleep disorder.

Creating the ideal sleeping environment

Provide a comfortable, dedicated sleeping spot away from high-traffic areas and noise. Orthopedic beds are especially beneficial for large breeds and senior dogs whose joints need extra support. Consistent sleep and wake times help regulate your dog's internal clock and improve sleep quality for both of you.

FAQs

Yes. Large and giant breeds like Mastiffs and Great Danes often sleep 14–16 hours a day as adults, and up to 18 hours when they are puppies or reach old age. Their greater body mass and slower metabolism mean they need more recovery time between periods of activity.

Completely normal. Puppies grow and develop at a rapid pace and sleep is when most of that growth happens. The brain, nervous system and muscles all develop during deep sleep. Interrupting a puppy's rest too often can lead to irritability and slow development. Let them sleep as much as they want.

A temporary increase in sleep is usually not a concern — it may follow an especially active day, a vet visit or stress. However, a sudden, sustained increase in sleep combined with other changes (reduced appetite, lethargy, weight loss) can signal illness. If your dog seems unusually tired for more than a few days, contact your vet.

Older dogs benefit from a supportive orthopedic bed that cushions aching joints. Keep the sleeping area warm, draught-free and quiet. Maintain a consistent daily routine, as predictability reduces anxiety. Regular gentle exercise during the day improves night-time sleep quality. If your senior dog is restless or seems in pain at night, a vet check is worthwhile.
