Dog Fat Tool
Calculate how much fat to add to lean meat to achieve the optimal fat content in your dog's diet.
Why is fat important for dogs?
Adult dogs typically need 5-15% fat in their daily ration (on a dry matter basis). Active and working dogs can tolerate up to 20%, and puppies need 8-12% for proper brain development. Too little fat can cause a dull coat and low energy.
Is too much fat harmful?
Yes. Chronically high fat intake leads to obesity, pancreatitis, and joint problems. Some breeds, like Miniature Schnauzers and Cocker Spaniels, are particularly at risk. For overweight dogs, you may need to reduce fat to 5-8%.
Example fat content of various meats:
- Beef tartare: ~5% fat
- Chicken breast: ~2-3% fat
- Turkey breast: ~1-2% fat
- Lamb (lean): ~8% fat
- Ground beef: ~15-20% fat

Salmon oil provides omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) for coat and joints. Flaxseed oil contains ALA, which dogs can only partially convert. Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties but few essential fatty acids. A mix of oils works best.
